The serenity prayer is one the most beautiful prayers from the Christian tradition. It offers much solace and wisdom. Most people are familiar with the first part, though only a few know the entire prayer, which was an untitled prayer written by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in the 1930s.
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time,
accepting hardship as the pathway to peace;
taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it;
trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His will;
that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
and supremely happy with Him forever
in the next.
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Grant me patience with things that take time
Appreciation for all that I have
Tolerance for those with different struggles
and the strength to get up and try again
One day at a time…
The long version of the Serenity Prayer as someone in recovery might recite ….
a little different from your own.
Cheers
Jeremy
Jeremiah,
That’s a beautiful version of the Serenity Prayer. It would relate more to someone in recovery as you said. Thank you for sharing it.
Peace,
Arvind
I can really relate to that version of the serenity prayer especially being in recovery. thanks for sharing Jeremy.
do you mind if I do this as a tattoo? I originally was going to do the original one because i’ve been down a rough road in the past because back in December we found out that I had pre cancerous cells on my cervix and although they were removed my doctor is says there is a chance that they will return.
