We felt this was an important article on emotions to share with our readers. Our novel “Nexus: A Neo Novel” also deals with uncovering layers of emotions and learning to deal with them. The following insights about your emotions presented by Aymen Fares are helpful and worth noting:

We have covered our thoughts and we have touched upon ego. This month we look at emotions. Emotions control most peoples lives. They are an inexplicable force that the majority of us have to deal with on a daily basis.

Think of your emotions in terms of energy currents. Imagine an energy field around you which changes shape, colour and texture as your emotions change. In spiritual terms this is called your astral body. Some people call this your emotional body or energy field.

Generally, your emotions serve your personality or your ego. If you wish to achieve a measure of personal development you must learn to master your emotions and not be ruled by them. This personal development is one of the first steps on the spiritual path of initiation and is also known as spiritually evolving. The goal of our personal development is to exercise control of our emotions. Energetically this is like calming the stormy sea and symbolically, emotions are represented by water.

This doesn’t mean that we do not ‘feel’ or that we should ‘shut off’ as many people do, on the contrary the only way to master your emotions is to get closer to them and actually find out what you really are feeling.

Our emotional needs are often manifested in physical form. A simple example would be; eating, many people eat too many sweets. Sweets are often used as a reward by parents or eaten at celebrations and may be associated with happiness. People who are not happy have a subconscious craving to eat sweets. Emotions control this behaviour.

Other ways in which emotions dominate are numerous. You may seek to satisfy desire in many ways, food, money and sex are common ways to do this. Your subconscious emotional needs dominate and cause behaviour which is not ‘good’ for you.

We measure ‘good’ from a reference point of what you, the soul behind your ego, thoughts and personality wants. Through the veil of emotion and ego, a clear path is often needed before your true self is discovered.

The way to still the waters is to

1. Find out what you are thinking.
2. Respond, rather than react.

Reacting means you are usually expressing a negative emotion such as anger and jealousy. Please notice how I said expressing. If we respond rather than react we will still feel the emotion. We do not however have to express it in a negative fashion. This two step process is simple, but hard to put into practice, the heat of the moment often providing a difficult training ground.

A common way to overcome this difficulty is to work backwards. Start with the moments that cause you to react. Look at incidents that cause you to get emotional, situations where people ‘push your buttons’. Anger and Jealousy are easy places to start.

Look for the message about yourself, don’t just react.

Your emotions originate from thoughts. Unravel the thread. Find the thought pattern behind the emotion. All negative emotions start with a fear.

Take jealousy for instance. This is based on the fear of losing your partner. It also has it’s origins from the incorrect assumption that you posses your partner. This shows up as issues of self worth and it means that you are comparing yourself to another person and judging yourself as less.

Envy is another negative emotion and again the origin is fear. The focus with envy is on what we are lacking. What you are really thinking is “The other person has what I want” This is based on one of two ideas;

There is not enough for everyone and I might be inadequate

I am not happy with myself or my situation.

This manifests with you launching an attack or belittling the person or object of your envy. Statements such as “I didn’t want that anyway” “That’s no good because…” mean you are focusing on what you don’t have.

Change your thoughts, focus instead on what you do have.

Once you are aware of the mechanics which come into play when your negative emotions are aroused, you have come a long way. What is required to finish the task at hand is a willingness to confront yourself. Remember, when emotions are raised in YOU, that is the signal for you to look inside. A common trap along the way is failure to look at yourself and instead look to the other person involved. This means you are not taking responsibility for your self. You need to shift the focus back onto you.

Finding and facing your fears is not always easy. All you need is light. Once you illuminate your fears to yourself, they quickly dissolve along with the accompanying emotion.

The majority of working women with depression believe that depression is the number one barrier to women’s success in the workplace, according to an Oct 23, 2003, news release from Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Women surveyed reported having various depression-related behaviors that affect their work, including leaving work early, not returning from lunch, avoiding contact with coworkers, and being unable to face work.

Treatment for depression can be beneficial. Of those women surveyed, 94% noticed improvement after seeking treatment for depression, such as psychotherapy or medication. Those surveyed reported that medication produced the greatest benefit; 96% who took medication reported work improvement.

Of those surveyed, only 47% with depression immediately sought treatment. When those who did not seek treatment were asked why, a variety of reasons emerged. These included not knowing where to go for help, work-related time constraints, concern that insurance would not cover the cost, concern that they might lose their jobs, the stigma of depression, or believing that depression is a sign of weakness or a character flaw.

Left untreated, depression can have a substantial effect on women’s work environments. In examining hindrances to achieving professional success, women surveyed rated depression higher than child and elder care responsibilities, pregnancy, and sexual harassment. Of those who lost their jobs while suffering depression, 89% attributed the cause of job toss to depression. Approximately one-third said depression completely interfered with their abilities to do their jobs.

Approximately 19 million American adults suffer from depression each year, including five million working women. Depression interferes with the ability to work, sleep, eat, study, and enjoy activities. Symptoms may be emotional (eg, restlessness) or physical (eg, headache, vague aches and pains).

This survey was sponsored by the American Medical Women’s Association and the National Mental Health Association. It was funded by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Telephone interviews were conducted in April and May 2003 with 751 employed women 18 years of age or older who were suffering from depression.

“The Secret” reinforces an important message of taking inventory of our thoughts and focusing them in a positive direction to create life changes that we desire. This is a wonderful message, yet without critical examination and thoughtful application, the ideas can prove unskillful in our interactions with individuals who suffer.

The idea that we attract everything through our thoughts is on the one hand a powerful message. However, it can also be a dangerous message when taken to an extreme perspective. We can end up blaming victims for their plight, such as: Individuals in poverty, survivors of disasters, the disabled or the abused.

I believe that at critical moments such as with Hurricane Katrina or with the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, our desire to alleviate suffering is most important. The extreme perspective can also assign wrongful thinking for causing diseases or illnesses. I feel uncomfortable when positive thinking is taken this far because it can allow us to become distant from another person’s need or suffering, since we can at some level just say, “Well, they must have brought this upon themselves.”

If taken to an extreme this perspective of our thoughts alone ultimately influencing the universe can approach arrogance. Certainly our thoughts, intentions and our ability to select our reaction to events are powerful tools for personal transformation, yet this message needs to be balanced with humility and compassion. Thoughts play an important role, yet at times our response needs to come from the heart not the head..

At a human level, we need to balance our positive thinking attitudes with compassion for ourselves and others. When individuals are in need, our hearts need to respond to them with empathy, care and understanding. If our positive thoughts disconnect us from compassion, then even if we succeed at an individual level, we may fail at a social level – we may achieve material success but lose our “soul” in the process.

When we approach positive thinking or “the law of attraction” with a mechanical attitude, then we risk limiting our growth to self-interest rather than growing in our compassion. From a higher perspective, we know that spiritual growth starts within our hearts and is not limited to our thoughts alone. The mind and heart work in harmony in order to create a life that is fulfilling at all levels.

In “NEXUS: A Neo Novel” our focus has been on personal transformation  of people who in one way or another are stuck. Through the journey of people in our book, we discover many insights to expand both our mind and our heart – to develop a positive mind along with a compassionate heart.

Peace & blessings,

Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis can produce an altered state of consciousness, similar to day-dreaming or being engrossed in an activity. When engrossed in a TV show or while driving on a highway we experience this altered state. In light to medium hypnosis a person is aware of their surroundings, and is receptive to positive suggestions. Hypnosis is used to change habits or to alleviate certain symptoms.

What happens?

During hypnosis you enter a relaxed state, in which breathing, heart and metabolism slows down. The conscious mind can rest, leaving the unconscious or subconscious mind open to suggestion. The subconscious mind is where our emotions, dreams, hopes and motivations reside.

Ordinarily we use only 10% of our conscious mind for daily tasks, the greater part of our mind is composed of the subconscious mind, which can create lasting changes for well-being and health.

The use of trance states to facilitate healing dates back to ancient practices in healing temples and shrines. Modern hypnotherapy developed from Anton Mesmer’s in the 1800s. Later psychologists and neurobiologists expanded our understanding of hypnosis.

Psychiatrist Milton Erickson (1901-80) used therapeutic metaphor and story to help clients. In my own work as a hypnotherapist, I have successfully used Erickson’s techniques with clients. His style offers a permissive style of hypnosis suitable for most people.

For most therapeutic uses of hypnotherapy a light or medium-trance is sufficient, in which the client remains fully aware of their surroundings. Some people decide to go into deeper trance states without conscious awareness. The state of hypnosis is induced by your own mind listening to the suggestions given by a hypnotherapist. After people have experienced hypnosis, I train them to use self-hypnosis to direct their own healing.

Self-hypnosis

Self-hypnosis involves self-induction using four stages of relaxation: deepening (mentally counting down from ten to one into an increasingly relaxed state), application of suggestions, and formal ending (mentally counting up from 1 to 5 into a fully alert consciousness).

In self-hypnosis, the individual plays a dual role of giving and receiving suggestions. Therefore, a person needs to remain consciously aware in order to give themselves suggestions for improvement and healing. Suggestions are positive statements given to the subconscious mind during the relaxed state.

What’s it used for?

Hypnotherapy is used for anxiety, mild depression, phobias, addictions, weight problems, pain and insomnia. Any illness with psychosomatic roots can be helped through hypnosis. The relaxed state offered by hypnosis also promotes healing and deep relaxation.

Arvind Singh is a trained hypnotherapist, speaker and writer who uses hypnotherapy along with guided visualization and breath therapy to help clients. His experience as a Hypnotherapist along with Deborah Morrison’s experience as a Counsellor has offered them insights for writing NEXUS: A Neo Novel.

We wish everyone Happy Holidays and our best for the New Year!!!

The holidays has many expectations around it. It is a time of joy, cheer, and a time for family and friends. Yet this time for some can be a period of depression, anxiety, self-evaluation and loneliness. These emotions can increase over the holidays with increased stresses, high expectations and fatigue. Emotions can be at an all time high and low.

Some reasons that can contribute to depression during this period include:

  1. Separation and divorce can leave you alone over the holidays
  2. Painful reminders of losing a loved one
  3. Unresolved conflict can come to the surface
  4. The added costs can create financial pressures, especially when the bills come in the New Year
  5. The increased activity and expectations can lead to higher physical and emotional stress

Some stresses are unavoidable, still you can exercise control through strategies:

  1. Recognize your loss instead of denying it and seek support from family members, friends, or people in your community
  2. Set aside disputes for now and consider whether you can forgive yourself for any hurt or pain you caused someone. Can you forgive another person for causing you pain or hurt? Forgiveness is a mighty step toward healing your heart
  3. Set a clear budget for the holiday season and stick to it
  4. Manage your time wisely and don’t cram too many obligations together
  5. Recognize that unrealistic expectations can lead to frustration, so set expectations that are realistic
  6. You have a mind willing to create positive change in your life. You are a plant that always finds the way to light

Depression, despair, loneliness and hopelessness are never permanent fixtures of the mind. They like clouds casting a shadow in time pass to reveal rays of hope.

In our novel, Nexus, the journey of each person gives hope, faith and strength. Nexus also has a timely message of love and compassion. It’s a unique journey that’s a perfect read over the Holiday Season.

Peace and blessings,

Arvind & Deborah

What remains as part of human transformation no matter where you live is the inner journey. This is precisely what Nexus is all about.

It is a movement from the outer shell of mental agitation to a quiet place of peace within. It is this place that great spiritual leaders, both ancient and modern, accessed for both inspiration and personal transformation.

We wanted to share with readers a way to create personal transformation & empowerment in our life through the journey of each person in the book. The transformation for each person is different involving meditation exercises, yoga, psychological understanding, spiritual insights and vivid experiences.

Nexus presents a holistic vision and an organic process of transformation derived from psychological, spiritual and social development of each individual in the story. It shows that through our access to the source of human creativity, we can regain lost hope due to pain, sorrow, loneliness, depression and despair. Logan begins his journey as he waves goodbye to Celeste in the distance. When he starts walking, he begins to notice that getting his body in motion does lift his mental fog. He starts feeling less dejected and even somewhat enthusiastic. The sun doesnt seem unbearable, especially as a cool breeze plays with his hair. He reflects on Celestes words. She was right: Now that he is taking action, he does feel better.

After 20 minutes, Logan notices he does feel more motivated, but the journey is only a third complete. He looks off into the distance. He sees the hill. With that sight, he regains his momentum. Simultaneously his negative thoughts disappear like nocturnal creatures that become inactive with daylight.

Logan starts to see his journey as an adventure. He feels like an explorer trekking his way through the wilderness with only his tenacity and intuition as guides. He will triumph like a mythic hero, bringing back the prize: Muriels medicinal herb.

While in these thoughts of optimism and grandeur the next forty minutes pass, Logan reaches the hill more quickly than he had anticipated. Wow! That wasnt so bad.

As Logan stands at the bottom of the hill he gazes up to the top, feeling somewhat concerned at its immense height. But, he reminds himself how far he has already come. He hears Celestes voice: Remember action before motivation. As he remembers her words, he feels that he can do it. He can scale the hill and it should take him no more than fifteen to twenty minutes to walk to the top, and so without another moments hesitation the next leg of his journey begins.

A scent of wild roses fills the air as Logan walks along the path. Birds sing, melodious and free. Their tune carries him along with greater ease. Butterflies playfully dance as they flutter amongst the flowers. One butterfly lands on Logans shoulder and he feels encouraged, as if this is a good sign.

Logan begins to walk swiftly but always carefully maintaining his footing.
The scenery is so beautiful around him that he looses all sense of time. Then, he remembers to keep moving his body. As he does so his motivation increases. With newly discovered motivation, his energy becomes more charged. Logan begins to realize that the climb is not nearly as difficult as he had imagined.

Suddenly Logan stops abruptly. From out of nowhere a diminutive, white bearded man appears, carrying a large staff.

Logan is so startled that he veers back off the path and falls over the edge of a dangerously steep cliff.

He luckily grasps onto the edge of the cliff, with his bandaged hands and holds on for dear life. His struggle to hold on is intense. He fears that if he loses his grip he may not survive the fall.

Who are you? the white bearded man asks.

Im Logan, he gasps while trembling.

No, who are you really? the man insists.

Alright, then if Im not Logan, then who am I? Logan cries trembling with fear, as tears and sweat run profusely down his face, his shirt drenched.

Ah, now youve asked the key question. Who am I? smiles the man.

I dont care who I am or who you are. Help me before I fall! I cant hold on much longer! Logan pleads fervently.

Oh, no. Why is it that the most simple is often the most difficult to find? continues the old man. He seems lost in his own riddle, unaware of Logans predicament.

Help me, please. Help! Logan is terrified, barely able to hold on another moment.

Suddenly, the white bearded man holds out his staff and says: Here, hold on to this.

One hand at a time, Logan grasps onto the staff. The old man effortlessly pulls him up onto a grassy area beside the path. Logan moans in relief, rubbing his sore hands that are now irritated even further. The pain is excruciating. The old man takes some pieces of a plant out of his pocket. He rubs the succulent leaves gently on Logans hands as he explains that the aloe-vera leaves will help accelerate the healing and ease the painful sensations. Logan is surprised when he finds that the pain is instantly relieved.

Amazing, declares Logan. And how did you manage to pull me up when I weigh much more than you?

The old man obliviously continues talking as Logan recovers from his ordeal: You are not just your body, mind, senses, or name. You are the Eternal True Self. When you were falling off the cliff, you were frightened because you equated your self as synonymous with your body. Yet, even if your body composed of five elements becomes extinguished, you will still live on.

With that, the old man points his staff up into the air and brings it down with a heavy thud on the ground to emphasize his point. You are the miracle of life and you have unlimited potential. You are light, love, and energetic motion and stillness. Remember who you are! Do not see yourself in a static mould, you are being even in motion. To define or label yourself narrowly is not to understand the depth of your own self. To believe I cant is an illusion, but to believe Ill try is to recognize you have no limit. Be free from setting narrow boundaries on yourself. Remember to first take action, and then even the impossible is possible the old man reiterates passionately.

Wow, declares Logan! Thats just what Celeste told me.

She is a wise woman, this Celeste, the old man says with absolute confidence as if he knows her well. My name is Sunny but Ill have to go now. Good luck on your journey. Then just as swiftly as he had appeared, the man turns and leaves, wandering out of sight behind trees off in the distance.

Meanwhile in another part of the room, Celeste asks Logan for a favour: Would you do something for me? What is it? Logan asks, feeling unmotivated to carry out any requests. Will you walk to the top of the hill on the other side of the stream and find a medicinal herb for Muriel? She’s having trouble sleeping at night, due extreme pain. This herb grows abundantly on the hilltop about three miles from here. The herb will ease her pain and help her get a good nights sleep. Will you do this for her? Logan is genuinely fond of Muriel yet is faced with inner turmoil when Celeste presents her request. Whats wrong with her? Logan asks. Celeste explains: She wants to keep it a secret for now. She really doesnt want to trouble anyone. I dont know. Im not sure, he says. Logan really wants to help but feels he cant. In fact, he really doesnt feel like doing anything. Besides, going up a hill doesnt sound easy. He doesnt feel like battling with any obstacle, whether its Mount Everest or just a tiny hill. Muriel is a great woman, but if I feel so tired and upset, I shouldnt even try. Celeste doesnt realize how difficult this task is for me. I can imagine how each step of those three miles to the hill will be excruciatingly difficult. The hot sun would be beating down on me. Then, Id get to that enormous hill and that would drain the remaining strength out of me After another moments reflection, Logan responds with a resolute, No! Why not? Well, I just cant. Why cant you? Im not motivated. What keeps you from being motivated? Im just too tired, too exhausted. Basically, Im just a hopeless case. I wasnt even able to hand in my reports on time at work. So, you feel that you are a hopeless case? Yes! Have you always been hopeless? Well, no. Then, how can you identify yourself with a permanent label of being hopeless when at times you have shown yourself to be resourceful in the past. Since you have been resourceful in the past, then you can be so now. Isnt that so? Yeah, I guess so. What seems to be keeping you immobilized is your label that youre hopeless and because you feel you are hopeless, you stop trying. When you dont try, you feel even more miserable and hopeless. It becomes a self-fulfilling tragedy. After a long time, Logan begins to feel glimmers of hope. His doubts start to leave him as he gains a belief in his capabilities. To confirm these positive feelings, he requests: Could you expand on what you said, Celeste? Sure, Logan. Its like this: If you put motivation before action, then you will continue to wait until you feel motivated. On the other hand, if you take action, then the motivation will surely follow. Okay; that sounds good but I have depression. I cant control how I feel. We can discuss your feelings another time. Why dont you take action now, and then evaluate how you feel. Go to the hill and get the herb for Muriel. Okay, Ill give it a try. I really like Muriel and I do want to help her. Point me to the hill. Thats the spirit! Celeste enthusiastically cries as she points to the far off hill and gives him a description of the medicinal herb as he leaves: Youre looking for a plant that grows about 2 meters high. It has creamy white flowers growing together into a rounded cluster or umbel like Queens Anne Lace. Its an unmistakable plant and youll easily spot it. Good luck on your journey!
